(They might say things like “I’m tired,” “This is boring,” or “How many sheets do I have to do?”)
Make the work feel more manageable by breaking it into smaller sections and offering short breaks. You can also use timers, rewards, or the student’s interests to make the work more engaging.
For example:
- Tell them they can take a 2 minute break after finishing a page. For students who need it, break it down to half pages, but keep the work time and break time proportional.
- Put on a timer and make it a game: see how many questions they can finish before time runs out, and give them a stamp or reward when they beat the challenge.
- Turn problems into fun stories based on what they like. A student who loves soccer might enjoy a problem about goals scored.
- If multiple students are not motivated, offer a whole-class incentive to play a game at the end if everyone stays focused.
