Building Strong Math Foundations In Children

Who We Are

Transforming Math Learning for Young Children

OneInMath has successfully partnered with numerous parents, high school students and public libraries, helping children achieve greater confidence and mastery in mathematics. Our personalized approach has shown significant improvements in students’ abilities and attitudes towards math, resulting in less anxiety and a higher likelihood of academic success.

At OneInMath, we recognize that each child is unique. Our tailored curriculum adapts to different learning styles and paces, ensuring that children not only learn but also enjoy the process. We are committed to reducing math anxiety and fostering a love for learning.

Since our inception, OneInMath has been dedicated to revolutionizing how young learners interact with mathematics. Our individualized curriculum is grounded in the belief that every child deserves a solid foundation in arithmetic. By continuously assessing and adapting our approach, we help students progress confidently and effectively, preparing them for future challenges in math and beyond.

Our STORY

How OneInMath Started

OneInMath was founded in 2010 by Urvi Gupta, a ninth grader at the time. She observed that she enjoyed math and the reason she enjoyed it was the way her dad taught her math in her younger years. She loved kids, and she wanted to share the same experience with the young kids so they can also love math.

Her desire was to teach just 5-6 kids. However, in the first class itself 12 kids showed up, and very soon it grew to 20 kids. Word spread quickly. The rest is history.

In 2016, Prarthana Prashanth, then an 8th grader fell in love with the OneInMath program and started a OneInMath chapter in Chicagoland, IL. Soon she opened several chapters in the area!

In 2022-2023, we started opening the program for anyone interested to start a local chapter. Several high school students have been motivated to start their own local chapters. The program currently runs in 6 states across US.

About the Program

OneInMath is a free, self-paced supervised program designed to:

Help young children (K-3) master math skills and build a strong foundation in their early years.
Help high school students develop into better leaders as they prepare to enter college.

The OneInMath program is currently offered in 12+ public libraries spread across 6 states including CA, GA, IL, NJ, PA, and TX. There are two sessions (fall and spring) consisting of 10-12 weekly classes in each session.

The program is based on learning using techniques like pattern recognition, memory recall, rigorous written and oral practice. It is designed for high-touch Tutor-student interaction and continuous assessment of students’ progress. It requires commitment from both parents and Tutors for the full session. The program is structured to enable an anxiety-free environment, and to build confidence and love for math.

Our CHAMPIONS

Volunteer-Run Program

Each library is managed by a Session Leader (a high school volunteer), with the help of several Tutors (also high school volunteers). Every year, the program benefits 350-400 students and is supported by 130-150 high school and adult volunteers.

OneInMath’s volunteers have received recognition and awards including the President’s Volunteer Service Award, Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, NextUp Award, and the Daily Point of Light Award. The program has received commendation from the Mayor of San Jose, Council Members of several districts, and the San Jose Public Library.

Why Math is Important

“Why am I learning this?” “Why is this important?” These are questions that many students ask when learning about various math concepts. The truth is, math is needed in every aspect of life, from trying to calculate a discount to managing finances to solving the next biggest physics conundrum.

According to Education for Global Leadership, only 16% of high school teenagers are proficient in mathematics and interested in a career in STEM. We believe one of the leading causes of this issue is a lack of exposure to quality education in the younger, more formative years and the debilitating effects of math anxiety that only increases as children grow older.

Young students should learn that STEM, especially math, is not something to be feared but is something that can actually help them lead a more successful life. That is why, at OneInMath, we aim to teach students not only arithmetic but also how to enjoy doing math! Ultimately, we hope to reduce math anxiety, spread our love for math, and build confidence in students, so they are able to succeed in whatever they set out to do.
