I am having trouble recruiting students and volunteers. What should I do?

The following answer comes from Session Lead for Lynnwood Library, Eileen Kim, who generated incredible number of volunteer and student registrations as a session lead for the first time!

It can be hard to find the right communities that are interested in the program, especially if it’s your first session at that location. However, there are multiple ways that you could reach the right people without a lot of effort!

Recruiting volunteers:

  1. Reach out to your school counselor, advisor, or librarian.

Many times, these people have access to send mass emails to all the students at your school. Pay attention to where you hear about volunteering opportunities and reach out to staff who can share about OneInMath!

  1. Ask clubs at your highschool

Clubs like NHS, KeyClub, and UNICEF are all centered around volunteering. Ask if their members can join OneInMath and share how their members could get volunteer hours from the program.

  1. Put up posters!

Posters can reach a lot more people than you would think. Put posters up in your community and school. Teachers are more than willing to help so ask if you can put a poster up in their classroom and ask if they could promote it to students.

Recruiting students:

  1. Find a way to contact local elementary schools

Whether it’s by posters or a simple email, ask if they would be interested in sharing a free math program with their students. Most schools are more than happy to have another resource to share with families.

  1. Ask your teachers

Teachers usually have a lot of connections within the school/school district. Ask if they can share the information with any district or school administrators that would be willing to help.

  1. Put up posters!

Again, this is more impactful than you would think. Put them up in parks, stores, and community centers – anywhere with a lot of kids!

Recruiting takes a lot of time and effort so don’t be worried if there isn’t a lot of interest at first! Do the things on this list and more people will slowly get intrigued by the program.

Happy people-finding!
